Waqrapukara Peru is an ancient Inca site located in the Apurimac region of Peru. The archaeological site is situated at an altitude of around 4,000 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, making it a popular destination for hikers and adventurers.

In Quechua, the name Warapukara is a combination of two words, Waqara means horn and Pukara means fortress. It is named after its form – Horned Fortress. It is located in Acomayo Province in the south of Cusco region.

The Inca fortress features impressive Inca ruins, including a ceremonial center, a fortress, and a series of terraces. The structures are incredibly well-preserved and offer a glimpse into the engineering and architectural skills of the Inca people.

During the Waqrapukara trek, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You will also encounter an abundance of wildlife, including condors, vicuñas, and other Andean animals.

Warapukara Tour Itinerary

Waqrapukara Peru Trek

Your full day trip from Cusco to Waqrapukara begins with a transfer from your hotel in the city of Cusco. We will be driving you for two and a half hours to a small Andean town, Sangarara. On our way, we will be having a brief stop in the picturesque Pomacanchi lagoon. This is an alluring place and a paradise for bird lovers. 

Once in Sangarara, we will be serving you a traditional Andean breakfast. After breakfast, we will be continuing to the Rinconada community. It is a place where we will begin our scenic full day trek to Waqrapukara. 

We will begin with a gradual uphill hike with the sight of Apurimac canyon. We will be stopping to see the flora and fauna, most are distinct to the region. Our tour guide will be explaining to you about them. 

Half way through the hike, we will be stopping to see the Pre Inca cave paintings. Our local expert will be giving you an insight into them. 

Once in Waqrapukara, we will be giving you a guided tour of the complex. You will be able to soak in the views while listening to the immersive history of the place. 

Once you have had your fill of the place, we will be hiking down the hill to Sangarara. Here we will be stopping for lunch before embarking on a drive back to Cusco city. We will be reaching Cusco by 0700 PM.
